On Thursday 4th February Les’ Crowthorne ‘B’ team (Les, Simon, Chris, Dave) played their eight match in this season’s BBL division 2. The match was against the Bracknell ‘A’ team. A 12-8 win leaves Les with a 4-4 record this season and a 8.8VP average.
Les jumped out to a strong 19imp (24-5) lead after the first half and held a 34imp lead after 22 boards. For the disaster that was the last two boards see below as Les lost the second half by 12imp (23-35) for an overall 47-40imp or 12-8VP win.
There were 4 double figure swings 2 to Les – a total 1imp swing to Les. A staggering 18 boards produced a 3imp swing or less – totalling 4imp to Bracknell. The 2 intermediate swings, both to Les, totalled 10imps to Les.
Les excelled himself with all but 1 lead written down. Sadly that board was one of the double figure swings below:-
Board 3 - 13 imps to Les as Chris (West) made 4

+2 (+680) on the

7 lead whilst Bracknell’s West made 6

-1 (+100) on the same lead.
Chris started this auction 1

- 3

- 4

- 4

. In spite of Dave’s jump shift and his 15 points Chris decided not to approach a slam given the weakness of his trump suit. This turned out to be a correct decision as the

lead set up an unavoidable

ruff for the defence. But in 6

the fortunate

distribution makes 12 tricks unbeatable.
Board 16 - 15imps to Les as Chris (North) made 4

+2 (+480) on the

K lead whilst Simon (West) made 4

(+620) on the

Q lead.
Bracknell started this auction (2

weak) – (2N) – X – (3

) - 3

- (4

) – 4

4

is unbeatable and 6

only falls to an minor suit lead rather than the more likely

lead. In the other room Les raised Simon's 2

bid to game and stopped any opposition activity in the bidding.
Board 23 - 14 imps to Bracknell as Les made 6

*-4 (-1100) on the

9 lead whilst Bracknell’s West made 3

-1 (+100) on the

A lead.

8 tricks is the limit for both sides in

s and

s respectively. Both sides proved this but Les played in a slam after an auction that should be shielded from beginners eyes (well anyone’s eyes really!). (1

) – X(Arrgh!) – (2

was it?) – 3

- (3

) – 4

- 4N(to play – sounds control asking to Dave) – 5

- 6

- (X). Simon, Dave reckons this fiasco is totally down you mate!
Board 24 – 13 imps to Bracknell as Bracknell’s North made 5

* (-650) on an unknown lead whilst Bracknell’s West made 3

+1 (-130) on the

10 lead.

Both pairs in Les’ team were at fault this second large reverse in a row. 10 tricks are available in the

suit and 8 in the

suit so both contracts should be beaten. Two

s and one

trick should put paid to 5

whilst three

s, a

and a

trick takes 3

down. So the home team defensive faculties were less than on song here!
Chris was put in an awkward place with 1

bid in front of him. The auction was (1

) – NB(?) – (1

) – NB – (2

) – X – (3

). Dave took Chris' second bid as a weak take out double and was expecting to bid 4

if the opponents got to a

game – they didn’t. He reckons Chris is better to bid 1N (not perfect) rather than pass at his first turn? Then the auction may well proceed (1

) – 1N – (2

) – 2

- (3

) – 3

- 4

. Did Bracknell get pushed to 5

? Any red suit contract at the five level should be costly if doubled!
